          Mission and Objectives of Conference


Mission:
Create a partnership of city-wide agencies and organizations to collectively develop, promote, and support a city-wide parent conference that stimulates a community spirit to improve the educational circumstances of children of African Descent in the Sacramento City Unified School District.

Focus areas and Objectives:
The BPSB has adopted the following focus areas developed by the Education is a Civil Rights Committee, chaired by George McKenna III to define its mission and objectives for the conference. Conference objectives follow each focus area:
1. Promote and implement educational policies and practices (including personnel assignments, training and evaluation) that advance rather than impede educational excellence for all African American students.
^ Assist parents in understanding the purpose of BPSB and how the organization works for the benefit of parents relative to district policies and practices
^ Discuss the role of instruction and learning in promoting the academic success of African American students
- The role of culturally responsive teaching in enhancing learning and promoting a high degree of self-worth
- Understanding the “hidden curriculum” and its role in making learning unfriendly

2. Improve high school graduation rates for all African American Students.
^ Discuss the importance of high school graduation
^ Discuss ways that parents can assist their children as they matriculate toward graduation
^ Discuss the pitfalls that lead to students dropping out of high school

3. Improve educational outcomes for both African American male and female students.
^ Discuss the importance of testing in public schools
^ Assist parents in understanding district grading policies and their impact on their children

4. Provide support for parents and families of underachieving African American students.
^ Solicit feedback from parents in order to better advocate for African American families
^ Provide parents a guidebook detailing parent rights in schools
^ Provide parents a listing of support programs and agencies for parents and youth that assist in promoting educational success for all children
^ Provide parents a list of lawyers/advocates that handle children and educational issues
^ Provide parents a list of do’s and don’ts in interaction with school officials
as they support their children in their educational endeavors
